What began as an early exploration, in 2023, Dougl

What began as an early exploration, in 2023, Douglas Cooper exhibited a group of small-scale watercolors of Pittsburgh in his solo-exhibition “Tops and Bottoms” here at Concept.

Known for his large-scale topographical drawings and cityscape murals spanning Pittsburgh to Frankfurt, Cooper has been working on an exclusive body of work for ‘Forbes Field and Other Remembered Places’ combining his signature perspective on landscape, memory, and histories, with an exciting use of watercolor at his large-scale. Bringing color to his typical monochromatic charcoal scenes invites a certain life and light to our collective memory of Pittsburgh that we are so excited to share with you.

Doug Cooper is a self-taught artist, a world-wide muralist, an author of Steel Shadows and Drawing and Perceiving, and a professor of architecture at CMU.

Join us (and Doug!) on Saturday, February 15, 2025 to kick-off the beginning of ‘Forbes Field and Other Remembered Places’. On future display in our Upstairs Gallery.

Through his vision of creating a future form by means of the past, his work questions and echoes the cultural significance of discarded materials and regrowth.

“This idea of regeneration. Giving form to new life, or bringing about new hope,” he says. “I did these pieces at the time that I was already in Nigeria and the economy of Ghana was really at its lowest point.
