John Chamberlain

John Chamberlain is an American Abstract Expressionist. He was born in Rochester, Indiana in 1927. Chamberlain attended the Art Institute of Chicago (1951-1952) as well as Black Mountain College (1955-1956). He maintained Studios in New York, New Mexico, Florida, Connecticut, and Shelter Island. Chamberlain worked predominately with automotive scraps, shedding light on Abstract Expressionism through sculpture. The late artist is most famously quoted saying in regards to his scrap-yard ready-mades; “I saw all this material just lying around against buildings, and it was in color, so I felt I was ahead on two counts.” John Chamberlain died in Shelter Island, New York in 2011.
