Just under 2 weeks before the opening of two very special exhibitions…

“‘When The Sun Is Out, I Think I Love You Better’ explores the delicate interplay between the visible and the hidden, and the quiet beauty found in close observation. The title for me is about all this nuance - You notice something more when the sun is out or it is a heightened sense of love at least you think it is. I like the “I think” because it is a bit of a question - are you sure you feel that? I like the in-between space of not being sure but still feeling something and feeling that something in a new light - the sun changed your feelings or your interpretation of things. The work for me is about noticing and seeing and maybe it changes from day to day or from different angles. Maybe the sun changes how you see it or feel about it, maybe the dark does. Things always feel better when it is sunny for me.”

Thomas’s artwork has been shown in group and solo exhibitions nationally and internationally including New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Estonia, China, Argentina, Portugal and Switzerland. Thomas received her MFA in Fine Art from the University of WisconsinMadison and BA’s in Religious Studies and Fine Art from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. She is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Studio Arts at the University of Pittsburgh.

Opening on 4/24… “Rock” by Kim Beck in our Upstairs Gallery.

“‘Rock’ is an exhibition about the slipperiness of surfaces—how things pretend, persist, and quietly change.
This body of work brings together weaving, sculpture, and photography to explore ideas of camouflage, gesture, and geological time. The works are built from the ground up, literally. Linen functions like a drop cloth, laid out on roads and sidewalks, collecting marks from rubble and utility paint—those vivid codes of urban infrastructure: orange for communication lines, blue for water, green for sewers, pink for survey marks. These materials leave behind silhouettes and rubbings, impressions formed by spray paint and crayon, echoing printmaking processes.

Together, these works examine how landscapes—both built and natural—are marked, layered, and transformed. They ask how something becomes legible, how a surface becomes a story, and how we might read the world through its residue.“

Beck exhibited at the Walker Art Center, Carnegie Museum of Art, Smack Mellon, Socrates Sculpture Park, Warhol Museum, OK Center for Contemporary Art, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Art Omi, Yale School of Architecture, and Hallwalls Center for Contemporary Art. Beck has been recognized with fellowships from prestigious institutions such as MacDowell, Yaddo, and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts. She has been a resident at Mass MoCA, Art Omi, Oak Spring Garden Foundation, Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program, VCCA, Montalvo Arts Center, ISCP, and Cité International des Arts. She has received awards from ARS Electronica, the Heinz Foundation, Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and Printed Matter, among others. Beck earned her BA in Visual Art and Theater from Brandeis University and an MFA in Painting and Printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design. She is a Yale Norfolk alum and a Thomas J. Watson Fellow in Japan, Australia, and Poland. Originally from Colorado, she resides in Pittsburgh, where she is an Associate Professor in the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon.
