Corneille is a Dutch painter born in Liège, Belgium 1922. He studied drawing at the Amsterdam Rijksakademie, but was a self-taught painter. He is most famous for being Co-Founder of both the REFLEX and Cobra art movements in 1948. Corneille also studied etchings under S.W. Hayter at Atelier 17 in Paris, France (1953), and ceramics with Mazzotti at Albisola Mare Italy (1954-55). Deriving his work from Surrealism as well as Expressionism, his pieces burst with both intense color and complex forms. He was awarded the Guggenheim Netherlands Prize (1956). Corneille died in Paris, France in 2010.
